A while ago, I bought Little Man several fact books. One happened to be about science. When the books arrived, I thought they were a little too high for a 4 year old, so I put them up on the bookshelf for later. There is a train on the front of the science book which Little Man immediately spotted. He then insisted that we read the book, and of course he sat still and absorbed the information. He now makes me read this book to him over and over. He has learned about simple machines, lasers, electricity, sound and light travel, gravity, and chemicals.
From this book, Little Man has discovered a love for science and experiments. I am having fun finding new experiments for us to perform at home and have some fun science gifts for him for Christmas.
Little Man's Science book that started the science craze:
Little Man's first chemistry set:
Up to now, our experiments have revolved around acid and base reactions. Little Man can tell you what household items are bases and which are acids. It's amazing what fun one can have with just a box of baking soda and a bottle of vinegar!
Blowing up a balloon using an acid-base reaction:
Acid/Base Volcanic Eruption:
Colored Eruptions:
Cleaning Pennies:
Exploding Sandwich Bag:
The other day Little Man was helping Auntie make a cake. As she got out the ingredients, he ran to me yelling "Mommy, mommy, Auntie has a base! She has a base!Come see!" One of the ingredients was baking soda. Auntie was highly confused until I explained. Funny boy!
From here we will venture into new experiments. My dad has gotten into the action as well and is having as much fun as I am coming up with experiments for the boy.
